Hua Hin Regatta 2008 - 31st July to 3rd August

A strong contingency of Platus from OMYCsailing participated in the two day Hua Hin Regatta followed by the long distance race for The Vega Rudder Trophy.

The latter race represents the memorable journey made by King Bhumiphol Adulyadej from Sattahip to Hua Hin in 1966.  In recognition of his journey His Majesty donated the rudder from his OK dinghy a the trophy for future races.  As such it is the most prestigious award for Thai sailors.

7 of our Platus made the 60 mile journey to Hua Hin and joined in the fun with hundreds of other sailors in Optimists, Lasers, 420's Hobie 16s, Hobie Tigers, Super Mods etc.

The first day's racing was in good but variable offshore winds but the second day was light and fluky and presented a could chance of "lottery" results.   One race was abandoned when the top mark became a "car park" for 20 or more boats, most of them deciding to take the opportunity to enjoy lunch!!

On the third day the start line was a bit chaotic with almost no wind, but luckily the wind soon picket up and a good 17 mile race for the Royal Vega Rudder was enjoyed by all.

You can find the results for the Platu Class in Hua Hin under the Raimon Land Platu Championship tab to the left.

At the same time a small fleet of larger yachts from OMYC were paving the way for a IRC class to be included in next year's regatta.  "El Coyote", "Patience 5" and "El Samali" practiced their racing and partying skills outside the official event, before returning to OMYC.  Brad Kirk in "Patience 5" did the return 60 mile leg in only 7 hours.

Altogether a very successful weekend and it is hope that next year an even great number of yachts from OMYC will see the considerable merit in joining this event.
